There are places you visit because you're hungry, and there are places you keep coming back to for the atmosphere. Buffet Tramonto in Klimno is, for me, exactly that kind of place.
Right on the waterfront, next to the local shop, Buffet Tramonto has for years been an essential gathering spot for locals, weekenders and holidaymakers in our area. Many will remember it under its earlier name, Lanterna, and later Buffet A&M, under which it built up a large following of regulars over the years. As of this season, the story continues under a new name – Tramonto, which means "sunset" in Italian. It's hard to imagine a more fitting name.

In fact, the sunset is one of the trademarks of this part of the island of Krk. As the sun slowly sinks behind the mainland on the far side of the Kvarner Gulf, the sea in front of the terrace turns shades of gold, orange, red and violet. Sitting there with a drink or dinner, you get the feeling the whole landscape is slowly turning into a postcard. Moments like these can't be rushed – you simply have to experience them.
Morning Coffee by the Waterfront
But Tramonto isn't a place that only comes alive in the evening. In fact, the day here often starts early in the morning.
Since the place sits right next to the shop, a charming daily routine has developed that you'll quickly notice. While part of the family goes shopping – usually the ladies, shopping list in hand – the rest of the group is already sitting on the terrace with their first morning coffee. Within a few minutes, familiar faces gather, swap news, recount the day's events and comment on what's happening around town. With company like that, you hardly need a newspaper.
A Relaxed Atmosphere with Anita
That relaxed atmosphere is something I particularly love. No one is ever in a hurry. Everything moves at that true Mediterranean pace that finally lets people on holiday truly unwind.
A lot of the credit for that goes to Anita, who runs Buffet Tramonto with plenty of energy and attention to her guests. After just a few visits, you'll notice she remembers people, recognises regulars and makes sure everyone feels welcome. It's exactly these small details that make the difference between an ordinary eatery and a place people are happy to return to.
Home Cooking and Traditionally Prepared Squid
When it comes to food, the kitchen keeps things simple and homemade, with the flavours most guests are looking for during their summer holiday. I'm especially glad that a local cook works in the kitchen, giving many of the dishes that unmistakable homemade touch you just can't get from ready-made recipes.
Seafood lovers will enjoy the crispy fried squid, prepared to stay tender and juicy, while the homemade Krk šurlice pasta is a dish well worth trying. This traditional pasta is one of the gastronomic symbols of the island of Krk, and here it's made with great care and respect for local tradition.
Pizza, Ćevapčići and Burgers for the Whole Family
Of course, the youngest guests are looked after too, along with everyone who prefers simple, tried-and-tested dishes while on holiday. Pizza is one of the most popular choices, and many families will find a meal here that satisfies everyone in the group.
If you prefer something more substantial, it's hard to go past the ćevapčići served in warm flatbread with kajmak. It's one of those dishes many guests order again the moment they're back in Klimno. Burger lovers won't be disappointed either, as burgers have become the go-to choice for younger guests looking for a quick, tasty and filling meal after a swim.
Coffee Worth Remembering
But no matter how important the food is, I have to admit there's one very simple thing that always draws me back here – the coffee. It might sound strange, but at Anita's the coffee somehow always tastes a little special. Whether the secret is in how it's made, the pleasant atmosphere, or the company that gathers on the terrace every day is hard to say. It's probably a bit of everything.
Why I Recommend Buffet Tramonto
On this page I only recommend places I genuinely believe will make my guests' stay on the island of Krk better. I recommend Buffet Tramonto precisely because it isn't just somewhere to eat or drink. It's a place where you can start the morning with the smell of fresh coffee, take a break after a swim, enjoy home-cooked food, or end the day watching one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island's east coast.
