Krk through the year: spring, summer and autumn
Festivals and dates change from year to year – the island’s seasons stay the same. Here we tell you, from our own experience as hosts, what awaits you on Krk in spring, summer and autumn.
Spring: wild asparagus
The first wild asparagus usually appears on Krk at the end of March. You can still find it in May – but by then the grass grows so lush that the thin shoots are harder to spot. It grows along the edges of fields, beside the paths by the sea, along fences and hedges, wherever there is plenty of sun.
Picking it is a small tradition here and at the same time a lovely morning walk in nature. You snap the shoots off carefully at the point where they still break easily; usually that is 20 to 30 centimetres.

A bunch of 30 to 50 spears is enough for a meal. The simplest way is to boil them briefly in salted water and serve them with olive oil and lemon – or to cook them in a pan for a few minutes and add olive oil and a few eggs. We are happy to show you where to find wild asparagus, and my wife will share her recipes with you.
If you would rather sit down at a laid table: in April many restaurants on the island hold their Asparagus Days, followed from April to June by the Days of Young Krk Lamb.

Summer: festivals by the sea

In summer, life on Krk moves outdoors – onto the waterfronts, the squares of the old towns and the lanes where you hear music in the evening. By day the island belongs to the sea, in the evening to its festivals.
In July, Vrbnik celebrates Žlahtina: the wine cellars open their doors, and on the first Sunday after the feast of Saints Peter and Paul the Razgon recalls an old shepherds’ custom. In the same month the Šurlice Days are devoted to the island’s hand-rolled pasta, and on the last weekend of August the Krk Island Wine Days follow.
Around 10 August the town of Krk turns into one big market for the Krk Fair – Lovrečeva. It has been celebrated since the 16th century: with a medieval market, a contest in hand-carving prosciutto and music late into the night.
In our municipality of Dobrinj, Rokova is celebrated in Šilo on 16 August. In the morning the fishing net is hauled ashore, the catch is prepared and shared with visitors along with a glass of Žlahtina; in the afternoon the procession makes its way to the church, and the day ends with a festival and fireworks. The day before, swimmers set off from Šilo on the marathon to Crikvenica.

Autumn: grape harvest and olives
When the beaches empty, perhaps the most beautiful time on Krk begins. The light softens, the sea often stays warm for a long while, and the island returns to its quiet rhythm.
In the Vrbnik Field the Žlahtina is harvested – a white grape variety that thrives only here and whose name comes from the Slavic word for "noble". The wine is pale, straw-yellow and fresh; it goes best with sheep’s cheese, fish and seafood.

In October it is the olives’ turn. Since 1996 Punat has held its Olive Days ("Dani maslina"), where guests too lend a hand with the harvest and see how cold-pressed olive oil is made. At the same time the island’s restaurants hold their Squid Days.
